Unfortunately the MEDLINE search we performed did not provide us with references to the articles by Kozak and Gibbs, 1 Fawcett and coworkers, 2 and Lindesay. 3 We have ordered copies of these reports and are looking forward to reading them. We apologize if we have overlooked these prospective studies focusing on the parental status and risk factors for suicide. We are sorry our data cannot provide any information on the influence of childbearing among unmarried women on suicide rates. As to whether loss of child custody increases the risk for suicide, we think there are (at least) two different situations involved, the first being loss of custody while the children are still cared for by their parents; we are not able to study the impact of such events on suicide rates from our data.
