Abstract

Abstract In this paper the relation between Young's elastic modulus E and latent heat of fusion L of pure metals is investigated. Both E and L depend on the inter-atomic bond forces, and thus they should be inter-related. Because these properties of the metallic elements show scatter in test results and do not always have identical values in different handbooks, the ratio of L/E also shows scatter, but in addition reflects upon the effect of bond forces on L and E in various metals. However for the comparison of the effect of atomic number on E and L and for evaluation of the approximate width of L/E scatter-bands for various subgroups, the accuracy of handbook values seem to be satisfactory. It was possible to investigate the effect of the metals order in the Periodic Table, the crystallographic and electronic structure, metal density, and choice of units for latent heat of fusion so as to minimize the E/L scatter.
