Abstract

The paper investigates the difference between the magnitudes of the modified J integral J M and the deformation J integral J D , with consideration being focussed on those test configurations where the remaining ligament width is small. The results provide underpinning for the view that with a bend configuration, the J M resistance curve lies above the J D resistance curve, whereas the reverse is true with a tensile loading configuration. With a material having a high crack growth resistance, and provided yield is contained, the J D and J M resistance behaviours are essentially the same, for both bend and tensile loading. However, when the deformation is extensive, there can be a significant difference between the J D and J M resistance behaviours, this difference being greater with the bend configuration than with the tensile configuration.
