Abstract

As an anatomical basis for the production of estrogens during pregnancy the total amount of the placenta tissue and the percentage of the syncytium were determined. These data together with the clinical course of pregnancy and the fetal state were used for the evaluation of the relation between the placental structure and the urinary estrogen level. There were 165 cases investigated. The coefficient of correlation between the neonatal weight and the estrogen levels was higher than the corresponding coefficient between the placental weight and the estrogen levels. The lowest estrogen values were found in cases complicated with the atrophy of the newborn's adrenals. In all these cases a normal placental structure was found. The authors are of the opinion that the results obtained are proof of the relation between the production of placental estrogens and the state of the fetal adrenals.
