L. ; Chang, C. -A. Abstract On the basis of 21 cm H I observations and 327 MHz continuum observations of the galactic background, the dependence of magnetic field strength on gas density in interstellar clouds has been investigated. The results indicate that interstellar clouds do not usually condense via isotropic collapse with a frozen-in field. Rather, they collapse by means of anisotropic flattening which is expected to occur along field lines. This result agrees with that expected from theoretical equilibrium models of interstellar clouds (Mouschovias, 1976).
