Abstract

Summary. The article reviews the development of legal considerations regarding the First Amendment and religious freedom including various interpretations and key cases of the Supreme Court about relations between church and state and their implications for social services. The author argues there is a growing interest in spirituality and religion in American society. This has encouraged a social climate supporting increased private sectarian involvement in social services. Therefore, the social work profession needs to develop a model of service delivery and professional guidelines which accommodate spirituality and religion while remaining committed to the principles of the First Amendment.
