Abstract

Abstract Because the key links fall between disciplinary boundaries, the relation between biological and cultural evolution has been exceptionally difficult to explore. Consideration of the available evidence suggests that a methodology based firmly on the principles of cognitive science and developmental psychology can clarify this relationship. The resulting human sociobiology provides improved hypotheses for several difficult issues, including the nature of cultural units, the replication schemes of cultural as opposed to genetic information, the fundamental mechanism of gene-culture coevolution, and the interplay of central tendencies with diversity in patterning cultural form.
