Abstract

Blood sugar level is being maintained by the rates of hepatic glucose production and the overall glucose utilization in the body. These rates of production and utilization can be calculated in the intact animal or human patient with help of properly designed tracer methods. Homeostatic mechanisms maintaining normal blood sugar level in the body operate by a feedback relationship existing between the concentration of glucose in plasma and the rates of glucose production and utilization. The role of insulin and other hormones in this feedback is reviewed. An analysis of the i.v. glucose tolerance test in terms of rates of production and utilization is given.
