Abstract
While our main interest in this chapter is on the recent evolution of French football since the 1970s and more particularly on the institutional change that has occurred since 1990, it is useful to briefl y retrace the whole history of football in France in order to better appreciate the characteristics of this fi eld. Hence, the chapter is structured as follows: After retracing the historical evolution of football in France (section 1), we present its organisation at both the federation, league, and club levels (section 2). Before the last concluding paragraphs we address the issue of clubs’ fi nance and licensing (section 3).
