Abstract

Mature intact female rhesus monkeys in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle were given two successive injections of estradiol benzoate. In all instances the first estradiol benzoate injection was followed by an LH surge indistinguishable from that occurring spontaneously at mid—cycle. If the second injection was given 4 days after the first, the negative feedback effect of the estrogen was observed but characteristic surges were not induced. A full response was elicited by the second injection when it was given 8 days after the first. An attenuated response to the second injection was noted when the interval between the 2 stimuli was 6 days.(Endocrinology 91: 1528, 1972)
