Abstract

1. Under fixed conditions, the mechanism of electroreduction of the esters of the α-nitrocarboxylic acids is determined by the ratio of relative rates of reduction and prototropic isomerization of the intermediate nitroso compound. 2. The final product from the electroreduction of nitromalonic ester is determined by the temperature and the acidity of the solution, either the aminomalonic ester or the analogous hydroxylamino derivative being formed.
