Abstract

The Mossbauer spectra of 9.5 at.% C as-quenched and aged martensite are analyzed in terms of seven Fe environments according to the the carbon multiplet model; in particular, one distinguishes the Fe atoms first nearest neighbours of an interstitial along or perpendicularly to the c axis. Recent13C NMR results are consistent with the model which leads to a B2 monoclinic iron carbide with parallelepiped cell of 5.73, 6.74 and 8.60 A.
