Abstract

If the recovery of the b-wave during dark-adaptation following a predetermined pre-adaptation to blue light is plotted, three different types of curves may be obtained. If the pre-adaptation is of short duration the recovery follows a monophasic course with a short time constant. This is called the p-component. If exposure to the pre-adaptation is of the order of 30 sec or longer a biphasic recovery is found, provided the brightness of the pre-adapting source has not been too high. In this instance the p-component levels off before recovery is completed and is followed, after an interval of about 10 sec, by a second rise, the s-component. At high intensities of pre-adaptation the recovery again becomes monophasic. The results are discussed in terms of double-flash recovery and of dark-adaptation.
