Abstract

Summary The restoration of the ‘Kingfisher Action’ by Van de Velde the Younger, in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, involved a major reconstruction of part of the principal ship. The authenticity of the painting had been held in doubt because of the inaccuracies of the quarter‐gallery on this ship. After the discovery that this part was an earlier conjectural restoration, the attribution was reassessed favourably. It was decided that the picture could be appreciated fully only if this later work were removed and reconstructed more accurately. The stages of the research and reconstruction work are described.
