Abstract

The third-order rate constant for iodine atom recombination in nitric oxide is 3x10 13 1. 2 mole -2 s -1 —much higher than that of any other chaperons which have been investigated. At high pressures of nitric oxide the recombination rate decreases and a transient absorption appears which we attribute to the molecule NOI. Extinction coefficients and equilibrium constants of this molecule have been determined and a quantitative account is given of the dependence of recombination rate on nitric oxide concentration over the whole pressure range.
