Abstract

The manuscript of A. K. Glazunov’s educational fugues (National Library of Russia, F. 187, N 642) is an important document refl ecting the creative ideas of the young composer at the fi nal stage of his musical education (summer 1881). Two elements of the manuscript stand out: rewriting a fragment of one of the fugues from J. S. Bach’s “WellTempered Clavier” and beginning to record the themes in all major and minor keys. Various forms of work – from composing themes to entire compositions — reveal Glazunov’s understanding of J. S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” as a voluminous – both instructive and creative – source.
