Abstract

PURPOSE Uroflow-EMG is a noninvasive test for the evaluation of lower urinary tract. Some external factors can cause artifacts on EMG activity. In our study, we determined the factors causing artifact formation on Uroflow-EMG. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between January 2004-July 2007, 214 Uroflow-EMG studies were included the study. 0f 214 studies 48 were repeated due to the artifacts on EMG activity. The reasons related to the Uroflow-EMG artifacts were evaluated. RESULTS The artifact formation was related with increased abdominal pressure, inappropriate movements of the children, environmental factors and children's feet being not able to reach the floor in 16, 7, 3 and 20 studies, respectively. In 2 studies any causing factor cannot be determined. CONCLUSIONS The environmental factors affecting EMG activity must be minimized. The immobilization of the patient must be provided. Especially if the patient is short for the device, a block must be put under his/her foot to achieve a relax position. In addition, the patient must be asked if he/she wants a male or female operator. To prevent the artifacts on EMG activity and increase the reliability of Uroflow-EMG, the appropriate conditions must be provided.
