Abstract
This research is an attempt to find out the significance of definite and indefinite words and their definition in the Holy Qur'an, when the word is mentioned sometimes as indefinite and other times as definite, this contrast must have intended meanings, and eloquence achieved. As definite and indefinite are linguistic styles and distinctive characteristics of the Arabic language. In this research, the researcher collected the reasons Shihab mentioned for using definite and indefinite words and their definition in the Holy Qur'an, as well as what the Holy Text achieves in terms of eloquent divine wisdom in this Qur'anic usage, and compared Shihab's explanation with that of other commentators.
