Abstract

An approach on the real-time assessment of the traffic state in freeway is developed based on the Variation Coefficient and Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation method. Space mean speed and space occupancy are selected as evaluation indexes of the model, according to the relationship between traffic flow parameters and traffic operation states. The indexes weight is decided by the Variation Coefficient of the value of evaluated indexes. Eventually, the weighted average method is adopted to translate the model outputs into specific value, which is defined as traffic state congestion index of freeway. The reliability of the new method is tested by real survey data of Jing Ha Freeway in Beijing. The result shows the new model is feasibility.
