Abstract
By explicitly including deuteron channels corresponding to a substantial part of the pickup strength in a CRC calculation including spin-orbit potentials, we have achieved a great improvement (factor of 5 in x 2 for a reasonable potential) in the fit to the elastic scattering of 30 MeV protons from 40Ca. This has not previously been fitted satisfactorily. This result greatly strengthens a previous claim that pickup channels contribute strongly to the real as well as to the imaginary optical potentials.
