Abstract
Tritium atoms recoiling from Li 6( n, α)H 3 in approximately 1 M LiCl or LiNO 3 aqueous solution form HT and HTO in the ratio of 0·10 ± 0·01 under most conditions. In 15·9 M Ca(NO 3) 2 solutions, the HT/HTO ratio decreases only to 0·023. An important reaction leading to HT formation is the hot abstraction reaction T ∗ + H 2O → HT + OH.
