Abstract

Amino-acid analyses have been made by the Moore and Stein method on normal wool and wool treated with boiling alkaline buffers: the only amino-acid to undergo appreciable destruction is cystine, serine and threonine being destroyed to a small extent. Determination of lanthionine in a number of wools treated with alkali under differing conditions shows that for every cystine residue attacked during the alkaline treatment one residue of lanthionine is produced. During the degradation of cystine, therefore, reactions other than lanthionine formation do not take place to any appreciable extent.
