Abstract
taminated with traces of I and 111. The crude product was triturated with ether (1 ml), the suspension filtered, and the residual solid washed with a further quantity of ether (1 ml). Chromatographically pure 3-carboxyindole (11) (0.3 g), m.p. 245-24606 (pK, (25% EtOH) 5.8) was obtained on repeated recrystallization of the product from 40% aqueous ethanol. A wide range of melting points has been reported in the literature for 3-carboxyindole: 214' (4), 218 (7), 218-221 (2), 222 (8), 222-223' (9), 220-224 (3), 220-225 (lo), and 246 (10). A sample of a cotnmercial product (Aldrich Chemical Co.) repeatedly recrystallized from 50% aqueous ethanol had m.p. 245-246°.5
