Abstract

SUMMARY The reaction of goats naturally infected with Brucella melitensis to vaccination with a living attenuated vaccine (Rev. 1) was studied in a group of 20 Maltese goats. Twenty similar but non-vaccinated goats were kept as controls. The course of the infection in the 2 groups was studied over a period of approximately 9 months, including 1 pregnancy and the 2 months which followed kidding. Vaccination appeared to prevent abortion which occurred frequently in the non-vaccinated goats. No other effect on the course of the infection could be detected. Vaccination had no effect on the general health of the goats or on their milk yield. The application of these findings to the field control of caprine brucellosis is discussed.
