Abstract

The reaction of [{Co(CO) 2(η 5-C 5H 4)} 2CH 2] with iodine gives two insoluble products which are formulated as [{Co 2I(μ-CO) 2{μ-(η 5-C 5H 4)} 2CH 2} n ][I] n and {ICo(I)(η 5-C 5H 4CH 2C 5H 4-η 5)Co(I)} n with a few (C 5H 4)Co(CO)I 2 end-groups, and two soluble but not isolable products which are formulated as [{Co(CO)I 2(η 5-C 5H 4)} 2CH 2] and [Co(CO) 2(η 5-C 5H 4CH 2C 5H 4-η 5)Co(CO)(I) 2] on the basis of their infrared spectra. The reactions of [{Co(CO) 2(η 5-C 5H 4)} 2CH 2] with mercuric halides give insoluble 1 1 adducts containing CoHg bonds in a reaction which is reversed by addition of donor solvents such as acetonitrile or by compressing the adducts in alkali metal halide discs.
