Abstract

AbstractThe reaction between silver phosphate and a number of substituted phenoxyacetyl chlorides is described. In all cases liberation of carbon monoxide is observed. After reaction, it is possible in some cases to isolate a substance with the formula R‐O‐CH2‐O‐CO‐CH2‐O‐R (where R represents a substituted phenyl group). The remaining compounds form resins of the phenol‐formaldehyde type but under certain circumstances it is possible to identify an o‐hydroxybenzyl alcohol. A possible mechanism for the reaction is discussed.
