Abstract

The dispersion curve of the Rayleigh phonon on Ni(100) has been measured by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy throughout the two-dimensional Brillouin zone in the ΓM direction. Lattice dynamical calculations, fitted to the experimental data, confirm a stiffening of the force constant between first and second layer of the crystal of the order of 20%.
