Abstract
We propose simple relations for approximate calculation of the smoothed local spectrum (Wigner’s functions) of the field in a multimode waveguide. Although the proposed approach is a ray method, it can be used not only at the regular points of a waveguide but also at caustics. For the case of a plane-layered waveguide it is shown that the accuracy of the obtained approximate formula improves with the smoothing scales. Therefore, the accuracy of calculation of the smoothed characteristics of the field can be improved due to loss of information on the small details of the wave pattern.
