Abstract

To the Editor.— Dr. Retan's letter has called attention to the fact that present-day treatment of obesity of any degree is generally unsatisfactory. In my article, I simply elected to avoid a negative attitude. By no means is it necessary for every patient or even any patient to follow the suggestions I outlined. The ideal program is that which will be successful for that particular person, provided that the diet is nutritionally adequate and that there are no significant physiological abnormalities. As to commercial programs for weight control, I am sufficiently acquainted with only two to express an opinion. The Weight Watcher's Diet Program seems effective in some cases, but contrary to their views, I believe an active exercise program to be useful in obtaining valuable caloric balance.
