Abstract

AbstractThe ratio of specific heats (γ) of liquids behaves with regularity in organic liquids; in homologous series; with substitution; with molecular weight etc. It also enters in processes like light‐scattering and sound absorption. In fact, the observed sound absorption of liquids can be explained only on the basis of the γ and viscosity. From these considerations it is suggested that γ is a fundamental physical property of liquid state. On account of its main contribution to sound absorption in liquids, it is suggested that γ of a liquid might be termed its „sonic anisotropy”︁.
