Abstract

A gas-chromatographic method for the determination of acetone is described. The technique is rapid and easy to perform and is applicable to serial measurements of acetone in breath and plasma using the same column packing. The method of breath sampling has been adapted for clinical use at the bedside and is suitable for studies on diabetic patients with hyperketonaemia. This method for plasma acetone determination compares favourably with an established chemical method.
