Abstract

The Raman spectrum of gaseous CD 4 was photographed at a gas pressure of 1 atmos and a reciprocal linear dispersion of 10.5 cm −1 per mm. An analysis of the O and S branches of the ν 2 band gave B 0 = 2.631 cm −1. Further analysis gave the upper state rotational constants for the ν 2 and ν 3 bands. Unusual features of these bands, previously reported for CH 4 ( 1, 2) are also present in CD 4. For both bands the derived rotational constants differ somewhat from recent infrared results. A new assignment of the ν 1 Raman band has been made.
