Abstract

The infra-red and far infra-red (> 100 cm −1) spectra of iodoform, 1,4-dithian and 1,4-diselenan and the complexes of formulae C 4H 8S 2.CHI 3, C 4H 8Se 2.2CHI 3 and (S 8) 3.CHI 3 are studied in the solid state. Raman spectra are reported on three complexes. Absorption and Raman bands of the complexes are shifted from their positions in the pure components. The CI 3 symmetric deformation (ν 3) absent from the infra-red spectrum of iodoform was found in the absorption spectra of its dithian and diselenan complexes; the degenerate CI 3 (ν 6) and CH (ν 4) deformations of iodoform are split into doublets in these complexes. The spectra and structures of the complexes are discussed.
