Abstract

Abundant radiocarbon is one of the most important contributions to date of the atomic pile towards the progress of mankind. In the following review, Dr. Libby, one of the pioneers in the field of tracer research, reviews some of the principles of the application of radiocarbon, such as synthesis of organic compounds with radiocarbon in a definite place in the molecule and biosynthesis (“isotope farming”). Dr. Libby is Professor of Chemistry and a members of the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago.
