P. ; Burbidge, E. M. ; Smith, H. E. ; Strom, R. G. Abstract New radio and optical observations of the peculiar system 3C 303 are presented. Aperture synthesis maps obtained at 1.4, 2.7, 5.0, and 8.1 GHz show the source to be highly asymmetric double, although it is almost certain that the various radio components are physically related. The two extended outer components have a flux density ratio of about 5:1 at 1.4 GHz. The compact VLBI component has been shown to coincide with a 17th magnitude N galaxy at z = 0.141, while the compact radio core of the extended western component is shown to lie within 1 sec of one member of a trio of faint UV-excess objects. Optical observations of the brightest of the UV-excess objects lying within the western radio component show it to be a QSO with a redshift z = 1.57.
