Abstract

The global solar, plus diffuse-sky, irradiance (WMO designation, T) and the total net irradiance (WMO designation, Q) were measured during 1960 and 1961 at ocean station ‘PAPA’ (lat. 50°N, long 145°W). The mean, annual global irradiance was 9 cal/cm 2/day and the total net irradiance was 122 cal/cm 2/day. The correlation coefficient between the mean, monthly global solar irradiance and the mean, monthly cloudininess was found to be essentially. The measurements of solar irradiance at the sea surface were compared with the values indicated by various published empirical formulae. The standard deviations of the measurements from the computed values were found to be approximately equal for station PAPA and for Seattle, Santa Maria, and Las Vegas.
