Abstract

The radar antenna intercepts radiation from the outside space. Noise drifts with time and varies with antenna position in azimuth and elevation. Inaccurate noise estimation will bring bias to weather radar products. This paper introduces a noise estimation technique which can estimate receiver power at each antenna position in real time. The paper describes the basic steps of the algorithm, and uses two sets of real time series data collected with C-band weather radar to test the performance of the algorithm. Results show that this technique produces more accurate noise power estimation and more coverage in the reflectivity field. Application of this technology in the C-band weather radar can improve the qualities of the radar products.
