Abstract

The purpose of this article is to seek, in light of numerous sensational claims, what influence 4Q Beatitudes may have left on Jesus or the author of the Gospel of Matthew. The work presents an improved and critical edition of the Hebrew text of the beatitudes found in 4Q Beatitudes (4Q525). Some scholars have claimed that this document is directly relevant for understanding the composition of Jesus' beatitudes according to Matthew 5 :3-11. Charlesworth points out the numerous examples of beatitudes in the Old Testament, the Old Testament Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, and in Rabbinics. He contends that the document is not unique to Qumran, and that there is no direct influence from 4Q525 upon any passage in the New Testament. The document, 4Q Beatitudes, is another example of lists of beatitudes in Early Judaism.
