Abstract

By explaining how I chose my biographical subject, gathered information, tracked down obscure people, conducted interviews, solved the major mysteries of Katherine Mansfield's life, and found a sympathetic publisher, I hope to provide a specific example of how to do research for a modern literary biography. The Katherine Mansfield that emerged during my quest was very different from the idealized portrait that had been created by Middleton Murry and reinforced by her previous biographers. Though illness gave her a delicate appearance, her character was more tough than exquisite; and she was more rebellious and capable than the figure in the legend.
