Abstract

The quenching of the fluorescence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene and pyrene, and that of rhodamine 6G and rhodamine B by sulphur dioxide (SO 2) has been studied. Stern-Volmer and bimolecular diffusion constants for the quenching process are determined. Fluorescence quenching by SO 2 is found to be extremely efficient, particularly for fluoranthene, pyrene and benzo(b)fluoranthene, and exclusively dynamic for all PAHs studied. The quenching of the rhodamines, in contrast, is much less efficient. The findings are considered to be of potential utility for the development of a fibre-optic SO 2 sensor and other methods for its quantitative determination.
