Abstract

Patricia Juliana Smith is associate professor of English at Hofstra University. She is author of Lesbian Panic: Homoeroticism in Modern British Women's Fiction (1997), editor of The Queer Sixties (1999), and coeditor of En Travesti: Women, Gender Subversion, Opera (1995) and Catholic Figures, Queer Narratives (forthcoming). Her book in progress is Britannia Waives the Rules: The Permissive Society in Postimperial British Literature and Culture.
