Abstract
‘Tall Type’ coconut plant is commonly grown by South Buru people in Moluccas province, Indonesia to support social and economic aspects. A part of Namrole people applied local wisdom called sasi kelapa, which was prohibition of picking coconuts in certain period of time. The objective of the research was to find out the age and the quality of the coconuts harvested at the end of the sasi kelapa period. It used the sampling method of the coconut trees of 20 yr old and > 30 yr old. The results of the research showed that the coconuts harvested at the 10 mo to 15 mo of age from 20 yr old coconut trees, the weight of the coconut kernel ranged from 318 g to 600 g and the thickness of the kernel ranged from 10.3 mm to 13.9 mm. The coconuts harvested at the 11 mo to 19 mo of age from > 30 yr old coconut trees, the weight of their kernel ranged from 170 g to 484 g and the their thickness ranged from 8.9 mm to 12.4 mm. The harvesting results of coconut at the end of the sasi period showed various maturities. The variation of the maturity of the coconuts had significant impact on the quality of the resulting copra. The copra has not met the SNI quality standard of copra.
