Abstract

The first Photographic Zenith Tube (PZT) of the U. S. Naval Observatory was designed by F. E. Ross. This instrument was based on the reflex zenith tube of Sir George Airy before 1854. This PZT was built with -funds from the International Geodetic Association. Ross PZT was used at the Gaithersburg, Maryland, station, of the International Latitude Service from 1911 to the end of 1914 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.
