Abstract

Gayatri Spivak's Critique of Postcolonial Reason examines the uneasy relation, in postcoloniality, between the discourses of rights and responsibilities. She demonstrates that their ethico-political value depends on challenging their metaphysical underpinnings. She cites the case of projects by the artist Alfredo Jaar as exemplary of the pitfalls of 'cultural politics' and 'essentializing moralism'.
