Abstract

Abstract This essay discusses the problems related to discussion of the publication and dependence of the Synoptic Gospels, as traditionally conceived. It first considers the state of the field on issues related to publication and dependence, including a diagnosis of its key assumptive building blocks. It then notes the problems in the current framework for thinking about the publication and dependence of the Synoptic Gospels, locating the assumptive building blocks within a context of ancient reading and writing practices. After surveying a few critical advances made in Synoptic studies and adjacent fields, it argues for considering the publication of the gospels not as the product of a particular moment at a particular place by a particular person but as a complicated historical process that takes place over several centuries, involves numerous people, and continues to the present day. In conclusion, it offers suggestions about new directions in the field.
