Abstract

To evaluate the psychosocial problems associated with strabismus and the effects of corrective surgery in Chinese adolescents and adults with strabismus. Psychosocial function was assessed by using a self-response questionnaire administered before and after corrective surgery. The self-response questionnaire was constructed based on previous studies and clinical experience of the authors. Many of the 56 included patients had some psychosocial problems. Improvement in self-confidence, self-esteem, and relationships with friends was reported after surgery. Chinese adolescents and adults with strabismus have low self-confidence and self-esteem, and experience difficulties in interacting in social situations. Corrective surgery improves psychosocial function.
