Abstract

This review covers the literature on the behavioural effects of lithium since 1974. Behavioural and cognitive actions of lithium are outlined in the context of a discussion of various methodological issues which arise with lithium research. A suggestion that lithium may produce behavioural effects by impairing the central processing of sensory information, particularly of stimuli of around difference threshold level, is examined in the light of a number of objections which have been raised to such a model.
