Abstract
SUMMARYTo sum up, the basic principles of psychological first aid concern ways of establishing effective contact with disturbed, overwhelmed persons who to some degree have lost touch with the world as it is. Once such contacts are made, it becomes reasonably easy to help many of these individuals take an active contributory part in the simpler phases of emergency activities. Devastating as a catastrophe may be, the very needs it creates can be an asset to psychological first aid. Unlike ordinary life, a disaster causes more urgent jobs than there are people to do them. Opportunities to regain self-respect and self-confidence are correspondingly greater. Psychological first aid can help many emotionally disturbed persons to take advantage of these opportunities and thereby to get back into their stride.
