Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhoea was first reported in the medical literature by B.T. Frank (1931). Dalton (1969) differentiated primary dysmenorrhoea into two distinct syndromes: congestive and spasmodic dysmenorrhoea described in detail in Tasto and Insel (1977). Chesney and Tasto (1975) devised the Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire to distinguish these symptom clusters. Dalton (1969) also suggested that the menstrual discomfort of spasmodic dysmenorrhoea might be related to muscular contractions, while the menstrual discomfort of congestive dysmenorrhoea might result from water retention and ischaemia. As yet no agreement has been reached concerning either the aetiology of the condition or its treatment. The physiological basis and psychological treatment now will be reviewed.
