Abstract

The psychological management of violence is an important priority for clinical and forensic professionals. Programs designed to reduce violent behaviour have proliferated in recent years, many of them based on anger management principles. This paper addresses the question of what the necessary conditions for an adequate program might be. Attention is drawn to the need for a theoretical base, for a full formulation of the individual case, for links with adjacent fields and for a consideration of cultural factors. The need to extend interventions beyond therapeutic sessions and to target serious offending in the mentally disordered is also discussed.
